# Addition and Subtraction for Kids

Addition and subtraction are two of the most fundamental aspects of mathematics and a key requirement of all math curriculums. Also these operations are used all of the time in real life scenarios as well as being needed in nearly every single job at any level. All science, engineering, financial and management positions will need a reasonably high level of math.

Imagine trying to get through life without a basic understanding of addition and subtraction! When shopping for everyday items you would have to put an awful lot of faith in others not to make mistakes that could cost you. Getting a mortgage for a house, making investment decisions or paying for a holiday in instalments would be very difficult indeed.

Once you understand the concepts of addition and subtraction, you should be able to:

- Complete missing number patterns
- Perform basic addition and subtraction calculations
- Work out number bonds initially to 10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90 & 100
- Understand different terminology for addition or subtraction (sum, total, difference etc.)
- Work out increasingly complex additions and subtractions on paper in columns
- Work out additions and subtractions in your head
- Understand the inverse nature of addition and subtraction
- Partition & split up larger numbers
- Use rounding and estimating methods to help check answers quickly
- Understand the correct order of operations (BIDMAS)
- Add and subtract fractions and decimals
