# Decimals and Fractions for Kids

Working with fractions and decimals is an extremely important part of the math curriculum and a good working knowledge of these is critical to your development in math and science. Also you will use decimals and fractions all the time in real life situations especially when you use money and go shopping.

Many job functions require a high level of mathematical skills such as astronomy, engineering, accountancy and investment banking. Virtually every job that exists requires a basic understanding of math and fractions and decimals are an important part of this.

After you've learnt the basics of decimals and fractions then you should be able to:

- Understand halves and quarters of various items (e.g. of objects, of a measure, of a number etc.) and relate these to decimal numbers
- Write down fractions correctly
- Work comfortably in the fractions tenths and hundredths and relate this to the place values in the decimal system
- Understand and draw equivalent fractions and use them in calculations
- Count up and down in various fractions
- Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
- Order and compare fractions
- Use factors and multiples in the use of equivalent fractions
- Work with numbers to three decimal places
- Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and back again
- Multiply mixed numbers or proper fractions by a whole number
- Use fractions as remainders
- Work with percentages and simple examples.
- Understand some key percentage equivalent fractions
- Simplify fractions
- Add and subtract fractions with different denominators using equivalent fractions
- Multiply simple fractions
- Divide fractions by whole numbers
- Multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1000
