Geometry - Properties of Shapes, Position, Directions and Motion for Kids
(scroll this section to read all)

It is extremely useful to know the properties of shapes in both arts and sciences. Being able to skilfully work with both 2D and 3D models comes in useful in jobs as diverse as film-making and mechanical engineering. It can also help you in your daily life too from wrapping presents to fixing a few household items. It is an important part of the math curriculum for this reason.

All jobs require a basic understanding of shapes and many higher grade occupations require a higher level of mathematical understanding, of which shapes play a key part, such as construction, architecture, engineering, science and the arts e.g. film-making etc.

After you have a good understanding of Geometry (Properties of Shapes, Position, Direction and Motion) you should be able to:

  • identify and draw common 2D shapes (e.g. triangle, rectangle, circle, quadrilateral, polygon etc.) in different orientations
  • identify, draw and make models of common 3D shapes (e.g. sphere, cubes, pyramids, cones, prisms etc.)
  • Understand angles within shapes including right angles and parallel and perpendicular lines
  • compare angles and know the difference between acute, reflex and obtuse angles and use a protractor
  • do mathematical calculations to find lengths of angles for certain shapes
  • understand properties of 2D shapes e.g. lines of symmetry
  • understand properties of 3D shapes e.g. number of edges, faces etc.
  • make and recognise 3D shapes with 2D nets
  • Be able to classify some real life objects into standard 2D or 3D shapes
  • understand the differences between regular and irregular polygons
  • organise and arrange patterns and objects
  • understand position, direction and movement of objects and the terminology relevant to these
  • understand part turns and rotations including clockwise and anti-clockwise rotations e.g. fourth/quarter, half, three fourths/quarters and full turns and know the angles of these turns
  • work with coordinates in all 4 quadrants and plot points
  • understand and plot mirror images / reflections of two dimensional items
  • draw 2D shapes specified by co-ordinates and infer missing points from a shape's property
  • use mathematical formulae to calculate areas of many standard 2D shapes and volumes of 3D shapes
  • know how to make congruent triangles
  • use pythagorus' theorum to solve right angled triangle problems
  • work out number of edges, vertices and faces on various 3D shapes such as prisms and cylinders

Below you'll find lots of excellent, top quality fun activities, games and learning videos to teach you everything you need to know about the geometrical properties of shapes. This information will be used often subconsciously during normal daily activities without you realising it.
