Road Safety

Road Safety

Nearly 2000 serious accidents per year occur to UK children on the road between the ages 0 - 14 and also tragically a number of deaths. The road is very dangerous place for toddlers and older children alike. Many accidents occur to children at age of 11 or 12 when they start to walk to school unaccompanied.

Keeping a careful eye on younger children and spending lots of time training older children is an absolute necessity to minimise this very serious risk.

Road Safety Tips

  • Ensure younger children are either restrained or hold your hand when walking as a pedestrian. Just a moments inattention can be fatal.
  • Always set a good example crossing the road and follow the Green Cross Code yourself. Children copy good and bad habits.
  • Teach young children (approx age 5 onwards) the Green Cross Code {LINK or add info} and practice it yourself by example
    • think : concentrate fully (no music, phoning, talking)
    • find a safe place to cross
    • stop at kerb
    • look & listen
    • let traffic pass
    • when safe walk quickly straight across the road but don't run
  • Teach children to ALWAYS stop and count to 5 at a kerb and to never rush.
  • Encourage older children to plan their best safety routes when walking to school and help them in the planning
  • When walking to school set off a few minutes earlier to practice each day.
  • Ensure children wear brighter clothing especially in winter
  • Distractions are a killer when crossing the road. Phone calls, texting, listening to music, talking to friends or being excited to see daddy across the other side are a real hazard. Always give crossing the road your 100% attention.
  • Vehicle speeds and distances are difficult for children to judge until they are about 8 or 9 years old.
  • Encourage children to play online road safety games and quizzes that are FUN but informative.
